Amazon.com Augmenting 1972's Greatest Hits with additional tracks, Best of... now stands as the preeminent one-disc introduction to the music of Simon & Garfunkel. Containing everything Greatest Hits offered except for the live version of "59th Street Bridge Song" (the original studio hit resurfaces here) and the incandescent "Kathy's Song," the updated retrospective boasts 20 tracks, in contrast to its predecessor's 14 selections. Added to the mix are the likes of "Hazy Shade of Winter," "The Only Living Boy in New York," "Song for the Asking," and "My Little Town," a one-off the twosome did five years after they ended their phenomenally successful partnership. Remastered from the original source tapes, Best of... also boasts far superior sound to the earlier hits collection. --Steven Stolder

nothing but the best December 26, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Best of Simon & Garfunkel is a strong CD that serves its purpose best as an introductory album to the great music these guys gave to us all. The quality of the sound is excellent and the artwork is good. The fact that this CD still sells well reflects the fact that Simon & Garfunkel really were a remarkable, formidable team. The CD comes with liner notes as well.
The CD begins with their classic hit entitled "The Sound Of Silence." Simon & Garfunkel harmonize so very well; and the guitar work enhances the beauty of the melody. The lyrics are thoughtful and memorable; and "The Sound Of Silence" is a strong beginning for this album. "Homeward Bound" is clearly another highlight of this album; and listen also for great, great hits like "I Am A Rock" with its sublime arrangement; "Scarborough Fair/Canticle;" and "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)." These songs are truly Simon & Garfunkel at their very best. The melodies are catchy and the lyrics are so sweet that they are easy to remember.
There are some other gems that casual fans may not recognize the first time they hear them. There's a great tune entitled "A Hazy Shade Of Winter" that has an excellent rhythm with just a side dish of a somewhat psychedelic flavored rock. "Fakin' It" is equally beautiful and I like the guitar work as Simon & Garfunkel never miss a note. "Fakin' It" is an underrated song on this CD. In addition, "Old Friends" is a very pretty tune that reminds me somewhat of ""Scarborough Fair/Canticle."
But the timeless classic tunes go on. "Mrs. Robinson," their huge success from the movie entitled The Graduate, is one of my favorite Simon & Garfunkel tunes; and they handle this magnificently. "The Boxer" is pensive with a very artsy presentation; and I really like "Bridge Over Troubled Water." "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is clearly an enormous masterpiece; this song is nothing short of a stroke of genius and I have yet to meet many people who don't enjoy this ballad.
"Cecilia" has an excellent beat; and listen for "The Only Living Boy In New York." "The Only Living Boy In New York" has excellent vocals by Paul Simon and of course when Art Garfunkel joins him this tune is simply beautiful. "For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her" is a stunning ballad; and "America" will always be a classic. The CD ends beautifully with Simon & Garfunkel performing "My Little Town." "My Little Town" is a strong number with key modulations that make this a very memorable number--and very pretty in its own special way.
Overall, this is about the best single CD introduction to Simon & Garfunkel that you're ever going to get. I highly recommend this for newcomers to the fine artistry of these two talented musicians.
music that is for the mind and timeless December 17, 2008 probably the most timeless music you will ever hear. everyone knew and loved simon & garfunkel.
Superior November 29, 2008 I enjoyed this cd more than "The Greatest Hits" album because most of these songs are not marred by audience clapping. Much better selection, also. Shipping was very timely.
Excellent November 11, 2008 This is a great replacement for the old 10-track LP I had as a kid.
Good Memories October 25, 2008 I think this music holds the test of time and brought some wonderful memories back to me as I listened.
